'The Cher Show' will first make its world premiere in Chicago starting June 12, with a cast led by two-time Tony Award nominee Stephanie J. Block.

It's official: Cher is bound for Broadway.

A new musical, based on the life and six-decade career of the iconic singer and actress, will begin previews on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre in fall 2018. Titled The Cher Show, the bio-musical will have its pre-Broadway world premiere at Chicago's Oriental Theatre, running June 12-July 15. Broadway previews are scheduled to begin Nov. 1, with an official opening set for Dec. 3.

"My life as a musical on Broadway," commented Cher. "It seems crazy, exciting and bizarre — but that's probably how my life seems to most people."

The Cher Show is produced by Flody Suarez and Jeffrey Seller (Hamilton), featuring a book by Rick Elice (Jersey Boys), direction by Jason Moore (Avenue Q), choreography by Christopher Gattelli (Newsies), and orchestrations, arrangements and musical supervision by Daryl Waters (Memphis).

The musical mines Cher’s extensive back catalog of hits, including "I Got You Babe," "Half Breed," "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves," "Believe," "If I Could Turn Back Time" and "Strong Enough." Three actresses play the entertainer at different stages of her life — a similar approach to that employed in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, officially opening April 22 at Broadway's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre after a La Jolla Playhouse tryout.

Cast as the three faces of Cher are Broadway vets Stephanie J. Block and Teal Wicks alongside newcomer Micaela Diamond. Joining them in the ensemble are Jarrod Spector as Cher's first husband Sonny Bono; Michael Berresse as her go-to costume designer and friend Bob Mackie; Michael Campayno as her longtime partner Rob Camilletti; Matthew Hydzik as her second husband, rocker Gregg Allman; and Emily Skinner as her mother, singer-songwriter Georgia Holt.

In addition to being featured onstage as a character in the show, Mackie will design costumes, with sets by Christine Jones (drawing raves for her work on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and Brett J. Banakis. Rounding out the creative team are Kevin Adams (lighting) and Nevin Steinberg (sound).

The Cher Show will not be structured like a traditional bio-musical, such as Beautiful: The Carole King Musical or the Gloria Estefan-centered On Your Feet. The non-linear show "takes place in its subject's psychological closet, and in that closet is everything she's ever been in her life — everything she has ever played, every song she's sung, everyone she's been married to, every pair of shoes she's worn, every success and every failure," book writer Elice told The New York Times

As its title suggests, the musical will be built like a variety show, a la the smash 1970s TV series The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour.
