Chewbacca Lady Tops 100M Views, Says She's "Overwhelmed With Gratitude"
"Find your 'simple joy'! Good Day. Now Good Night. It's all love."
In less than two days, a video of a Texas mom trying on a toy Chewbacca mask has topped 100 million views on Facebook and even got the attention of the actor who played the Star Wars character.
On Friday night, Candace Payne wrote that she was shocked and overwhelmed that her video, intended for friends, had gone viral, but she was grateful so many seemed to find so much joy in her silliness.
"Today has been a whirlwind. I'm grateful for every kind word and comment even if I haven't replied. Y'all. OVERWHELMED with gratitude. Let's keep belly laughing again and again," Payne wrote. "Never imagined finding my 'simple joy' would land me more VIEWS on a little FB video than Mark Zuckerberg has followers. INSANE. Find your 'simple joy'! Good Day. Now Good Night. It's all love."
In the four-minute video, Payne says she bought the Chewie mask for herself from Kohl's as a secret birthday present. It's possible no one has ever had more fun with a Star Wars toy. "It's the simple joys in life," she wrote with the video.
Payne's fun became popular so quickly, "Chewbacca" began trending on Twitter and Kohl's told The Hollywood Reporter that the mask had sold out online.
The company thanked Payne for the unintended vast plug by hooking up her family with Star Wars merchandise, including Chewbacca masks for the entire family, she wrote on Facebook.
The mask, which usually retails for around $20, was going for as much as $395 on Amazon and eBay on Saturday.
Even Peter Mayhew, the actor who brought Chewie to life in the space adventure saga, had to say hello.
"Absolutely wonderful! Cheers," Mayhew wrote on Reddit.
"I'm such a happy chewbacca.." This lady is still making me smile. Lovely video to come out on my birthday :) pic.twitter.com/khUizi6nFf— Peter Mayhew (@TheWookieeRoars) May 21, 2016
