Children's film, TV festival in limbo
Amsterdam's Cinekid burdened with debtAMSTERDAM -- The future of Cinekid, widely regarded as the most important festival for children's entertainment on film and television, is in doubt.
Festival director Sannette Naeye has sent a SOS letter to the Amsterdam authorities and local political parties, stating that the organization is in danger of losing its offices in Amsterdam.
After its last edition in October, which broke attendance records with more than 35,000 children, Cinekid was left with a debt of 170,000 euros ($212,700). In previous years, the city of Amsterdam has covered the costs, but it is not certain that this will happen again.
"If no support is available at short notice, it is feasible that Cinekid will not be able to set up next years' edition," Naeye told local press Wednesday.
