China Box Office: 'Pacific Rim' Continues to Crush Local Comedy 'Tiny Times 2'
Guillermo del Toro's sci-fi epic has grossed $104.3 million in less than three weeks in China, compared to $98 million in the U.S.
Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' Pacific Rim continues to smash everything in its path at the Chinese box office.
Over the weekend, Guillermo del Toro's sci-fi epic sailed past the $100 million mark, grossing $23.7 million (145.1 million yuan) for a total of $104.3.million (639 million yuan) in 19 days of screening, according to statistics released by the Chinese entertainment business analysts Entgroup.
That means the China box office has outstripped the U.S. take, which is just north of $98 million.
The movie's staggering success in China comes as the Motion Picture Association claimed victory in its efforts to secure hundreds of millions of dollars in payment for studio titles released in recent months.
Tiny Times 2, a speedily turned-around sequel to author-director Guo Jingming's Tiny Times, took in $17.1 million (104.5 million yuan) last week, ranking second on the charts.
That's a strong performance by the lifestyle comedy, which has the critics sniffing but appears to have struck a chord with China's young urban filmgoers.
In third place was One Night Surprise, on $15.5 million (95.24million), followed by Unbeatable ($9.1 million) and The Palace ($7.5 million).
The Vin Diesel-driven franchise Fast & Furious 6 was in sixth place, taking $2.8 million to bring its cumulative revenues in China to $66.4 million.
Jurassic Park 3D and Pixar's Monsters University are due to open in China on Aug. 20 and 23, respectively.
