China National Television, DHX Media to Launch SVOD Platform for Kids

The 'Teletubbies' Canadian owner will supply 700 half-hours of Mandarin content

Canadian kids producer DHX Media has partnered with China National Television to launch an untitled subscription video-on-demand service in China.

The deal with the new-media broadcast division of China Central Television will see around 700 half-hours of DHX Media kids content dubbed in Mandarin and rolled out via VOD, advertising VOD and subscription VOD services. The series, to be offered initially in China, include Teletubbies, Inspector Gadget, Madeline and Sonic the Hedgehog.

DHX Media titles to be later released online include Caillou, Super Why! and Monster Math Squad. The VOD services will be available in China, excluding Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

There is no word on when the online services will launch. The deal was unveiled during a Canadian trade mission in China, led by Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper. "Over the coming years, we look forward to growing DHX’s global footprint, and critical to that will be expanding into China, one the world’s largest markets," said DHX Media vice chairman Michael Hirsh, on Sunday in a statement.

DHX Media expects to continuously dub series in its 10,000 half-hour library into Mandarin for distribution in China.
