Consolidation of 1,000 players could prove challenging

BEIJING -- China has reiterated plans to consolidate its vast telecommunications, Internet and broadcasting systems, saying it will create a single national oversight company to manage the nation’s 1,000-plus cable TV operators.
Although China’s cable operators serve 170 million subscribers -- compared with the 66 million in the United States -- analysts say many are small players who may be hard to integrate into one company.

Tao Shiming, an official at the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, told guests gathered late Wednesday at the ongoing Beijing Television Festival that SARFT was seeking approval for the single company from China’s Cabinet, the State Council.
