Chinese Pop Star Han Geng Teams Up With MTV for Human Trafficking Documentary

MTV's EXIT campaign has linked up with Han Geng, one of China's best known pop idols, to launch a documentary, Human Traffic: China, aimed at raising awareness and helping prevent human trafficking in China.

The documentary is hosted by Han, who recently signed up for the latest installment of the Transformers franchise, and tells the stories of real people affected by the human trafficking trade in China and the wider region.

Among those featured in the documentary are Xiao Xiang, a young Chinese boy abducted for illegal domestic adoption, Kyi Kyi, a woman from Myanmar trafficked to China for forced marriage, and Thien, a young girl from Vietnam trafficked to China as a forced sex worker.

"MTV EXIT worked closely with anti-trafficking agencies across China to document the real stories of people affected by human trafficking," said Matt Love, director of MTV EXIT, in a statement.

"Our goal is to educate young people on this critical social issue, and encourage audiences to take action if they suspect human trafficking is happening in their communities," said Love.

The 36-minute documentary is in Mandarin, with English subtitles, and is available rights-free and at no cost to broadcasters.

It was produced with the support of China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) and the United Nations Inter Agency Project on Human Trafficking (UNIAP), in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), Walk Free and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The documentary has already gone live on and Sina Weibo, which are MTV EXIT’s official media partners.

MTV China’s nightly program, TLC, will be premiering clips from the documentary from Oct. 9 thru Oct. 11.

The 29-year-old Han is massive both in China, where he has 35 millions followers hanging on his every word on his Weibo account, and in South Korea, where he began his show-business career as a member of the chart-topping pop group Super Junior.

His star continues to rise quickly. Han was named Most Popular Mainland Male Singer at the CCTV MTV Mandarin Music Honors last year, Top Worldwide Act at last year’s MTV European Music Awards and Favorite Asian Act at this year's Nickelodeon's 26th Annual Kids' Choice Awards.

Han was most recently seen in Vicki Zhao Wei’s So Young, one of the biggest homegrown hits of the year, with box-office earnings of $117 million.

"I call on my fans to watch this documentary and spread the word about human trafficking in China so we can help protect our friends, families and communities from falling into the trap. Together, we can end it," said Han.
