The Golden Globe-nominated 'This Is Us' star will head the cast in an updated version of the spiky relationship comedy-drama, opening at the Geffen Playhouse in May.

Chrissy Metz is headed to the stage.

The Emmy-nominated, fan-favorite star of NBC's This Is Us will head the cast of Neil LaBute's Fat Pig, making her theater debut in an updated version of the play premiering in Los Angeles at the Geffen Playhouse next May.

Metz will play the lead role of Helen in the edgy comedy-drama about a bright, funny, sexy plus-size librarian who begins dating a slick young professional named Tom, creating uncomfortable situations with his judgmental friends and co-workers, and gradually causing him to question the convictions of his own heart.

The play premiered to critical acclaim off-Broadway in 2004 in an MCC Theater production that starred Ashlie Atkinson as Helen and Jeremy Piven as Tom, alongside Keri Russell and Andrew McCarthy. Fat Pig made its West Coast debut three years later at the Geffen, with a cast that included Chris Pine.

In March this year, Metz appeared in a one-night-only benefit reading of the play for MCC Theater, directed by LaBute. The return engagement at the Geffen will be directed by Jo Bonney, who staged the play's original production on both coasts. LaBute has reworked the text to reflect the current climate.

"Not long after Fat Pig's extended run at the Geffen, I decided to expand the play to include another office scene and a varied take on the ending," said LaBute in a statement. "Both of these additions give new voice to the female characters in particular, yet I have never allowed the material to be added to a production until now.

"I have waited for a revival that excited me and that I could be an intimate part of," continued the playwright. "I've now found that opportunity in the return of this play to its Los Angeles home. I can't wait to work with Jo again, and to have this exciting chance to see Chrissy Metz onstage."

Additional cast is to be announced for the production, which will begin previews May 16 ahead of a May 23 official opening. Fat Pig replaces LaBute's The Way We Get By as the final show in the Geffen's 2017-18 season.

For her work on This Is Us, Metz this week received her second Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a supporting role in a series, limited series or motion picture made for television.
