Christal returning to distribution

Company works through bankruptcy protection

TORONTO -- Quebec's Christal Films said Tuesday that it will return to movie distribution after working through bankruptcy protection, this time in partnership with E1 Entertainment.

Christal founder Christian Larouche, who already has a first-look deal with E1 Entertainment, will resurrect Christal Films as a subsidiary of the indie studio.

Larouche previously had a movie releasing partnership with Toronto-based Maple Pictures, which handles Lionsgate product in Canada.

Christal Films will acquire and distribute films from Canada and Europe mainly for the French-speaking Quebec market.

The move aims to enlarge E1 Entertainment's share of the Quebec distribution market against Alliance Films, Canada's largest indie distributor, which runs Alliance Vivafilm in Quebec.

The first Christal Films title to open in Quebec is "A vos marques ... Party 2" by Frederik D'Amour. It hits theaters June 16.
