"I got scared of repeating myself," said the actress of the perceived similarity between the film's Elle Woods and her own character in 'Married With Children.'

Christina Applegate came very close to bending and snapping.

The actress, known for playing Kelly Bundy on the Fox sitcom Married With Children, spoke to Entertainment Tonight at the Los Angeles premiere of Vacation on Monday, where she discussed her reluctance to play Elle Woods when she initially read the script for Legally Blonde. The 2001 film's lead role ended up being a star-making turn for Reese Witherspoon.

"The script came along my way, and it was right after I just finished Married, and it was a blonde who was, in that first script, dim-witted, but ends up going to Harvard," said Applegate, 43. "I got scared. I got scared of repeating myself. What a stupid move that was, right?"

However, Applegate said that the right person ended up playing Elle.

"Reese deserved that, and she did a much better job than I ever could," continued Applegate, who has had roles in the films Anchorman and its sequel, Going the Distance and Hall Pass. "And so, that's her life, that's her path."

On Wednesday, Applegate pointed out on Twitter that she didn't actually turn down the part of Elle. "To clarify I did not pass on that movie," she tweeted. "The script came my way. It was never offered to me. Gotta clear that up."

The interview can be seen in the video below. Applegate's tweet is also below.
