Cinedigm bringing World Cup to U.S. cinemas

Final match to screen in 15 theaters July 11

AMSTERDAM -- Digital-cinema company Cinedigm said Wednesday that it has secured rights to present the final World Cup match in 15 U.S. theaters operated by Cinemark, Rave and others on July 11.

Announced during the Cinema Expo exhibition confab here, the deal follows a number of European pacts for cinema presentations of World Cup matches. Cinedigm previously beamed 3D presentations of football and basketball championships into stateside theaters.

"With the world's attention bearing down on this single championship moment, we are absolutely thrilled to have a partner such as Cinedigm to deliver a piece of sports history," Rave president Tom Stephenson said.

Dallas-based Rave will present the World Cup final at sites including the former Bridge deluxe multiplex in West Los Angeles, which the circuit recently acquired and rebranded as Rave Los Angeles 18.

"Whether you're a fan of Team USA, Brazil, England, Japan or any team in between, all World Cup fans will realize that theaters aren't just for movies anymore," Cinedigm Entertainment president Jonathan Dern said.
