CineEurope: Lionsgate Screens Exclusive Clips from 'John Wick 2,' 'Deepwater Horizon,' 'A Monster Calls'
“One of my favorite characters returns with a vengeance,” said Keanu Reeves as he introduced the sequel to his 2014 action-thriller.
Lionsgate on Wednesday opened the third and penultimate day of CineEurope in Barcelona, giving audience members an exclusive glimpse of Peter Berg’s upcoming disaster drama Deepwater Horizon.
The retelling of the Gulf of Mexico disaster in 2010, which stars Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich and Kate Hudson, is set to bow in September, and the trade show was treated to explosive scenes from inside the BP oil rig just as chaos hits.
There also was a special clip from A Monster Calls, introduced onstage by director and Barcelona local J.A. Bayona. The drama, which stars Felicity Jones, Sigourney Weaver and newcomer Lewis MacDougall and features Liam Neeson voicing the gigantic monster, is scheduled to hit theaters in October.
Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone also appeared via video message to introduce a preview of La La Land, Damien Chazelle’s “lyrical love letter to Hollywood,” which has been tapped to open the Venice International Film Festival later this summer.
The presentation also featured an extended special look at John Wick: Chapter 2, which was introduced onscreen by Keanu Reeves, who promised bigger action and grander locations than the first outing.
“One of my favorite characters returns with a vengeance,” he said.
Among other future titles given brief mentions were Robin Hood: Origins; My Little Pony: The Movie (including a message from voice star Emily Blunt); and Patriots Day, reuniting Berg and Wahlberg and focusing on the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.
CineEurope runs through June 22.
