CinemaNow is sold to Sonic

Digital media software maker Sonic Solutions has acquired privately held online movie and video service CinemaNow. The companies didn't disclose a price tag, but rival Movielink last year went to Blockbuster for $7 million.

In the past, CinemaNow had received investments from Lionsgate, EchoStar/Dish, Cisco Systems and Menlo Ventures.

CinemaNow will be combined with Sonic's Qflix team to form a new premium content group, led by Sonic executive vp strategy Mark Ely. The firms have worked together to offer download and burn options of DVD movies via Sonic's Qflix DVD drives.

CinemaNow offers more than 6,000 movies, TV shows and music videos. (partialdiff)
