The puzzle game launched Thursday

With Angry Birds and Tetris movies currently in the works, it shouldn't come as a surprise that app developers are creating mobile games with an eye for the big screen. And that's certainly the case for startup Seriously, which on Thursday launched puzzle game Best Fiends

Seriously, which has offices in Santa Monica, Calif., and Helsinki, is founded by former Rovio executives Andrew Stalbow and Petri Jarvilehto. During their time at the Angry Birds developer, they experienced first-hand how to grow an addictive game with cute characters into an entertainment franchise. Now, they're looking to do the same with Best Fiends, which follows a troop of bugs in the world of Minutia as they battle the evil slugs of Mount Boom.

Best Fiends, the first in a series of games that Seriously plans to launch, comes with a YouTube channel that features video introduction of the game's five main characters and additional content.

To create the cinematic experience, Seriously called upon composer Heitor Pereira (Despicable Me) to create score the game with a full orchestra. "When Petri and Andrew invited me to be a part of the game, one of the things they kept saying was, 'we want a real orchestra,'" Pereira tells The Hollywood Reporter. "I could have said, 'maybe just a little ukelele is effective,' but when I saw the footage and how the game flows, I thought they were totally right."

Because the Minutia characters are bugs, Pereira researched insect sounds and used the rhythm to form the basis of his score, then he selected an instrument to represent each character.

He recognizes that his audience will be listening to the music from their iPhones and iPads instead of high-quality theater speakers, but he notes that music is important to the storytelling element of the game.

"Music adds depth to the experience of the player," says Pereira, who is currently scoring the upcoming Despicable Me spinoff Minions. "Never forget that it's entertainment. We want to keep this persona having the best time he or she can."

Best Fiends is currently available to download in the Apple App Store and will be available for Android before the end of the year. The next installment of Best Fiends is slated for a 2015 release.
