Canadian exhibition giant adds Imax 3D screens in time for summer releases of "Transformers 3" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."

TORONTO – Canadian exhibition giant Cineplex Entertainment is doubling down on 3D cinema by acquiring three new digital Imax systems and upgrading seven of its existing Imax film-based theaters to digital projection.

The three new Imax theaters, to open by fall 2011, are due in multiplexes in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and in Windsor and Ancaster in Ontario.

The seven upgrades will also bring to 12 the number of Imax theaters that Toronto-based Cineplex has in its stable.

Cineplex said its latest Imax theater buys come ahead of the July releases of Transformers 3 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, among a heavy slate of Hollywood blockbuster 3D movies to be released this summer.
