Cinepolis appoints exhibition head

Former PVR executive joins Indian multiplex startup

NEW DELHI -- Cinepolis, the Mexican exhibitor that recently became the first international film theater chain to establish an Indian presence, announced Thursday the appointment of Ashish Shukla as head of exhibition.

Shukla was previously head of infrastructure and development for Bharti Retail, part of the satellite TV to telecoms giant Bharti. Previously, he was CEO of Indian multiplex pioneer PVR Cinemas.

New Delhi-based Cinepolis is planning to launch a nationwide chain of premium movie theaters that will each house significantly more screens than most Indian multiplexes. The company has earmarked a three-year investment outlay of $78 million and says it wants 500 screens by 2016.

"Ashish brings on board an extensive first-hand experience in film exhibition and real estate," said Cinepolis India managing director and country head Milan Saini.
