Cinepolis eyes Latin America growth

MEXICO CITY -- Cinepolis, Latin America's biggest exhibitor, will make its first foray into South America in May with a multiplex opening in the Colombian capital of Bogota.

The theater chain also will enter Honduras next year with a new complex, said Alejandro Ramirez, CEO of Morelia, Mexico-based Cinepolis.

The exhibitor now has nearly 1,700 screens in Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, El Salvador and Costa Rica, the bulk of which are in Mexico. As the Mexican exhibition market grows more saturated, Cinepolis has been expanding its international footprint into Latin America.

The Colombia and Honduras openings will pit Cinepolis against Texas-based Cinemark, which operates more than 950 screens in a dozen Latin American nations.
