Cineworld numbers show first-half growth

Preliminary figures show 1.2% rise boxoffice revenue

LONDON -- U.K.-based exhibition chain Cineworld Group issued a preliminary market statement Tuesday, saying that it recorded a 1.2% growth in boxoffice revenue and a 0.7% rise in total revenue for the first six months of the year.

The group, which is due to post interim results for the six months ending June 26 in August, told the stock exchange it performed "as expected" during the first half of 2008.

The exhibition chain described the release schedule for the first half of this year as "reasonably strong," with such movies as "I Am Legend," "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull" and "Iron Man" all helping to put bums on seats.

Cineworld said that its boxoffice market share of 23.6% remains "unchanged" from that revealed in April.

But the exhibitor noted that the final quarter of this year likely needs to be strong to level out what it thinks might be a slower third quarter in 2008, when compared with third quarter 2007.
