Cineworld posts 9% revenue hike for '09

But screen advertising revenue down

LONDON -- U.K. theater chain Cineworld, listed here on the stock exchange, issued a pre-close trading update posting a 9% rise in revenues, a 14.6% uptick in boxoffice and a healthy rise in retail cash for the year ending Dec. 31, 2009.

The second largest exhibition chain with 77 sites and 790 screens said the rise in retail and boxoffice takings "more than compensated for the decline in other income, principally screen advertising revenue."

The upshot for the group is profit performance "expected to be in line with market expectations."
