Clive Davis Doc, Concert to Open Tribeca Film Festival
Executive produced by Ridley Scott, 'Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives' will premiere with performances by Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Hudson and Earth, Wind & Fire.
The documentary Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives will open the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival, complete with a chart-topper concert at Radio City Music Hall.
Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Hudson and Earth, Wind & Fire, among others, will perform after the doc's world premiere on April 19.
Based on Davis' best-selling 2013 autobiography, Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives explores the life and historic career of the seasoned music executive and producer, from his humble Brooklyn beginnings and brief stint as a lawyer to his development of major record labels (Columbia, Arista, J). The doc also encapsulates the discoveries and careers of artists he nurtured and steps inside his storied annual Pre-Grammy Gala for the first time. The loss of Whitney Houston, to whom Davis wrote a pleading letter before her death, is recounted in a major chapter of the film.
Directed by Chris Perkel, the film was produced by Michael Bernstein of Scott Free Productions, with Ridley Scott and Mary Lisio executive producing alongside IM Global's Stuart Ford, David Schulhof and Deborah Zipser. IM Global financed the film and is handling all international distribution rights. WME is selling it domestically.
"Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives is a fascinating exploration of his remarkable story and the impact that a great producer can have on artists and music," Jane Rosenthal, co-founder and executive chair Tribeca Film Festival, said Thursday in a statement.
Added Tribeca's Paula Weinstein: "The Tribeca Film Festival has a wonderful tradition of artists supporting artists, so honoring Clive Davis and his unwavering commitment to music and creativity is the perfect way to open our 16th annual festival. With special live performances by some of the most talented artists of our time, it will be an unforgettable night to celebrate the arts and Clive."
The 16th Tribeca Film Festival, presented by AT&T, is set to run April 19-30.
