CNN to launch on Freeview this week

Channel to air every night between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m.

LONDON -- CNN International will add distribution in 14 million more U.K. homes when it launches Thursday on free-to-air digital platform Freeview.

The deal will bring the news channel's total U.K. distribution to more than 20 million homes, more than double that of such rivals as Sky News and CNBC. CNNI will broadcast only from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. every night.

Tony Maddox, executive vp and managing director of CNN International, said the broadcaster is "delighted" with the deal.

"U.K. viewers will be able to enjoy not only our signature global news and feature programming but also a new slate of new programs we're developing for Europe primetime," Maddox said.

January programming highlights will include "Middle East Challenge," hosted by Hala Gorani, and the inauguration of Barack Obama.
