While hanging poolside at Coach's Coachella bash on Friday, the model/actress shared the story of her first Coach purchase ever — along with why her famous parents actually want her to be an actress.

It seems odd given the nature of the beast — two incredibly notable Hollywood personalties actually wanting their child to follow in their acting footsteps, instead of shielding them from that madness. But that's exactly what Robin Wright and Sean Penn wanted of 23-year-old daughter Dylan, who has appeared in campaigns for Stuart Weitzman and on the covers of Jalouse, Treats, and L'Officiel Italia and is now dipping her toe in thespian waters (she'll appear in Kevin Spacey's Nixon and Elvis, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February).

"I had expressed that I really want to write and direct," Penn told Pret-a-Reporter while sitting under a cabana at Coach's Backstage soiree, held at Soho House's temporary desert digs. "And both of them separately said — basically their advice was, you can’t direct until you know what it’s like to act. So that’s how I ended up doing it."

The blonde beauty, who on Friday wore a head-to-toe sheer baby blue Coach ensemble (except for a pair of lovingly worn black boots that she brought from home), is in the midst of trying to get financing for an independent film project.

STORY The Need-to-Know Milliner for Coachella

"It's tough in this industry in the independent film world. Getting funds for that kind of thing is hard," she said as Echosmith performed a live set in the background. Kate Bosworth, Daisy Lowe, Zoe Kravitz, Jena Malone and Rosie Huntington-Whitely also were spotted milling about the sprawling La Quinta estate, which was once owned by TV king Merv Griffin.

OK, so it seems Penn actually has quite normal, down-to-earth parents who teach her good lessons about work ethic and whatnot. So it's only natural that her shopping habits are pretty "normal," too.

STORY Jaden Smith Wore a Dress to Coachella

"It’s funny because when I lived in New York right after high school, the first bag that I bought was off the street. It was this really cool vintage leather bag and it ended up being by Coach from the 1960s or something. And I bought it for like $10 bucks from a guy who thought it was a rip-off, but it was real."

As for any upcoming Coach campaign work, Penn says she would "love" to appear in brand ads in the future. Back in September, she worked with Stuart Weitzman on a short film. And in January, Coach acquired Stuart Weitzman. So something tells us we'll be seeing her in Coach advertising sometime soon.
