Cologne Conference adds indie film section

German media festival and confab runs Sept. 30 – Oct. 4.

BERLIN -- German media festival and confab the Cologne Conference has added a new section focusing on independent cinema.

The Independent section will screen indie films from around the world as German premieres.

Cologne Conference director Martina Richter said the new section filled a need among the Cologne festival audience.

"The audience has been demanding more independent films, films that, in Germany, one sees either very late or not at all," Richter said.

The new sidebar will run alongside the Cologne Conference's TopTen section, featuring international TV and film highlights from the past year, as well as the Look section, which focuses on productions with an unusual visual aesthetic.

The 2009 Cologne Conference runs Sept. 30 – Oct. 4. The Hollywood Reporter is the festival's media partner and will again this year present The Hollywood Reporter Award honoring innovation in the German media industry, at a gala awards ceremony Oct. 3.
