Colorado authorities say one person is dead and two suspects — a male and female — are in custody after a shooting Tuesday at a suburban Denver school.

"It is with extreme sadness that we can confirm that 1 student at the STEM School was killed in today’s #stemshooting incident. The immediate family has been notified. Douglas County Coroner Jill Romann has not officially identified the student is stating it’s an 18 year old male," the Douglas County Sheriff tweeted on Tuesday night.

Later that night, the account identified the adult suspect in custody as 18-year-old Devon Erickson. "We will not be releasing any photos at this time as it could jeopardize this critical on-going invest. We still have interviews to conduct and we want to make sure we have the most accurate information," the statement added.

Earlier in the day, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said the shooting injured nine, according to Holly Nicholson-Kluth, undersheriff of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. Numerous ambulances and Flight of Life choppers could be seen on live local news coverage moving in and out of area.

Sheriff Tony Spurlock told reporters around 4 p.m. Tuesday that the injured were all students and and an unspecified number were in "serious condition" at local hospitals. He said their ages were 15 and older.

Wednesday morning, the sheriff said all but three students had been released from the hospital. Those who remained were in the intensive care unit.

The two suspects are students at the school, the sheriff said. Their exact motive is unclear. Two handguns were recovered from the scene. The male and female suspects were taken in to custody unharmed after a possible firefight with deputies. None of the the first responders were hurt.

The shooting occurred at STEM School Highlands Ranch, a public charter school with more than 1,850 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. It is fewer than eight miles from Columbine High School.

The sheriff's office said deputies responded around 1:50 p.m. to the school in the Highlands Ranch community about 15 miles south of Denver.

Lines of firetrucks, ambulances and law enforcement vehicles are at the scene and a medical helicopter landed on a grassy field.

The shooting remains under investigation. Authorities said there would be future press briefings on the incident.
