Together with stylist Micaela Erlanger, the 'Crazy Rich Asians' star opted for an Asian-American designer.

When stylist Micaela Erlanger and Crazy Rich Asians star Constance Wu began discussing the actress’ awards season looks, they decided early on that they wanted to work with a female Asian-American designer for the Golden Globes.

“It was an important conversation and one that we had early on,” says Erlanger. Wu is nominated in the best actress in a musical or comedy category for her role in the romantic comedy.

“The film is significant for so many reasons and this is an important moment in history,” says the stylist. “We felt wearing a female Asian designer was appropriate — especially as it is the first major award show of the season.”

The winning choice: a stunning custom Vera Wang nude tulle, A-line, spaghetti-strap gown with a sheer classic corset bodice, accented with a rouille orange velvet bow.

While Wu hasn't worn Vera Wang on the red carpet before, she had tried on dresses along her press tour for the Golden Globe-nominated film, including one that served as the inspiration for her red carpet gown, says Erlanger, who recently released her own jewelry collaboration with Bauble Bar.

“We actually remade the gown and customized every detail down to perfecting the perfect shade of nude.” Wu accessorized her glamorous look with Messika diamonds, a custom hand-dyed Roger Vivier clutch, and Guiseppe Zanotti heels.

“I’m in the business of making movie stars and you have to keep that in mind when you make red carpet choices. It has to be thoughtful, the dress has to be perfect for the person wearing it, and it’s even more special when there is meaning attached to it. Celebrating an Asian designer was an amazing bonus.”
