Corus ups Benson at cabler

TORONTO -- Canadian broadcaster Corus Entertainment on Wednesday said it has promoted Erica Benson to vp programming at its premium pay TV service Movie Central as well as the suspense and thriller cable channel Scream.

Benson was most recently director of programming at Movie Central. Her promotion follows Corus' September closing of Movie Central's Vancouver office, which included the departure of director of creative affairs Shelley Gillen.

As she takes over from Gillen, Benson will oversee program scheduling and development of original production for Movie Central, which faces first-time competition in western Canada from upstart premium pay TV service Superchannel. She will perform those same duties at Scream.

Toronto-based Corus also said that Ted Ellis has been named vp of programming and production for the country music-themed CMT cable channel and Max Trax, a digital audio service. Ellis was formerly director of programming for CMT.
