"Cousin Sal" Iacono Launches Sports Gambling Media Company Extra Points

The company debuted its flagship podcast 'Extra Points' on Monday, hosted by Iacono and The NFL Network's Dave Dameshek.

After years of guest appearances as the go-to gambling aficionado, Sal Iacono, AKA "Cousin Sal," has started his own venture with Extra Points, a media company focusing on sports, sports betting and comedy.

Presented by Mush Media, the company launched Monday with its flagship podcast Extra Points, hosted by Iacono and The NFL Network's Dave Dameshek, which will release episodes weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays across all major platforms. Iacono and his childhood friends "The Degenerate Trifecta" will also move their Against All Odds show from The Ringer to Extra Points, along with new comedy podcast Laugh Lines that will premiere Wednesday with a rotating lineup of comedians. 

Iacono, Jimmy Kimmel's real-life cousin who broke out as a writer and "Cousin Sal" personality on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, has since become one of the hosts of Fox Sports' Fox Bet Live and is featured weekly on the Fox NFL Thursday Night Football pregame. For over a decade he has also appeared on the The Bill Simmons Podcast for their "Guess the Lines" gambling segment.

It was recently announced that Iacono and Kimmel are exec producing a 30 for 30 ESPN documentary about the 1986 New York Mets, and The Ringer has teamed with Grand Central Publishing for Iacono's upcoming gambling book You Can't Lose Them All, due out February 2021. 

"As a betting man, I think it's a wise move to start up a sports media empire during a global pandemic," he said in a statement. "What could possibly go wrong?"

Extra Points comes just as major sports are returning from the coronavirus shutdown, with Major League Baseball holding its rescheduled Opening Day on June 23, the National Basketball Association resuming its season from Orlando's ESPN Wide World of Sports complex on Thursday and the National Hockey League kicking off its postseason tournament on Aug. 1. 

The launch also follows Simmons selling The Ringer to Spotify in February, which included ownership of its culture website as well as its 30-plus podcast network that includes shows on sports (flagship The Bill Simmons Podcast, The Ringer NBA Show, Against All Odds), food (The Dave Chang Show, House of Carbs) and entertainment (The Watch, Binge Mode). The largely unscripted, chat-style shows serve as a complement to the highly produced scripted and narrative nonfiction podcasts that Spotify already owns through its 2019 acquisitions of Gimlet and Parcast, and continues the audio giant's expansion into the podcast business.
