Makeup artist Aaron de Mey breaks down the luxe-punk look fresh off the New York Fashion Week runway.

There’s a reason a cat eye seems to always be in style. From Taylor Swifts recent gorgeously graphic version at the VMAs to the Siouxsie Sioux–inspired one at an early New York Fashion Week show, Creatures of the Wind, it seems the moment is now for a big, bold take on a classic.

“I’m trying to blast punk and street toughness with luxury,” said NARS makeup artist Aaron de Mey backstage on Thursday. “It’s a very classic slightly punky, slightly street black gel liner and I’ve taken it very angular through the sides to really make it into a cat eye and a smudgy smoky black pencil underneath.”

The two key products for this “simple look, very easy,” are NARS Black Valley Eye Paint ($25), for the upper lid — applied with an angled brush — and Black Moon Eyeliner Pencil ($23), which de Mey drew on the lower waterline before smudging it using a Q-tip and his finger. Additionally, “I ask the girls to squint their eyes so it gives a little bit of a runoff under the eye area.”

The models went sans mascara because, let’s be honest, the liner look is strong enough. Two other iterations included gold glitter for a more luxe feel. “I want it to look almost like the girls would have done it themselves — it’s that kind of spirit,” said the makeup artist. “I don’t want it to look precious. It’s an uber-cool girl, essentially. I like the elevation of it, the idea of sweeping upward, directing it toward the corner of the eyebrow [which] I hope gives it modernness. I like it to look a little aerodynamic.” Aerodynamic and perfectly edgy.
