Criterion Picks Up U.S. Rights to 'Secret Sunshine'

Deal marks DVD distributor's first acquisition of a Korean film.

CANNES -- High-end DVD distributor Criterion has picked up its first-ever Korean title, taking U.S. home entertainment rights to Lee Chang-Dong’s Secret Sunshine from CJ Entertainment.

Secret Sunshine premiered in Competition in Cannes in 2007. Jeon Do-yeon won the best actress Palme for her performance as a recent widow who, trying for a new start, moves with her son to the town where her dead husband was born. But soon, another tragedy overtakes her.

Secret Sunshine won best film at the 2007 Asia Pacific Screen Awards and Jeon’s co-star Song Kang-Ho took best actor prize at the Palm Springs fest in 2008.
