Critic's Week 'Godfathers' announced

Juan Antonio Bayona, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo off to Cannes

PARIS -- Critic's Week will have a Spanish flair this year as the 48th annual edition welcomes filmmakers Juan Antonio Bayona and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo as "Godfathers" of the Festival de Cannes sidebar, organizers said Friday.

Bayona's first feature, "The Orphanage," played at the 2007 Critic's Week and was a boxoffice hit in Spain, earning 14 nominations at the Goya Awards. Prior to that, he worked as a successful video and commercial director.

Fresnadillo started off strong in 1997 when his short film "Esposados" won an Oscar, then went on to direct feature title "Intacto," which opened the 2002 Critic's Week sidebar.

Fresnadillo's second feature, "28 Weeks Later," is the follow-up to Danny Boyle's "28 Days Later." The 48th annual Critic's Week lineup will be announced April 24.
