'Super Troopers' Sequel Launches Indiegogo Crowdfunding Campaign
Broken Lizard is turning to fans to help fund a follow-up to the 2001 cult hit.
Who wants more shenanigans?
Broken Lizard, the comedy troupe behind Super Troopers, are mounting a sequel that will require the effort — and, key point here: money — of fans of the cult hit in order to make a sequel.
Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, Erik Stolhanske, the writers and stars of the original, are mounting a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for the follow-up to the 2001 movie.
To make the film, Broken Lizard must raise a minimum of $2 million by April 24. If the funding goal is met, preproduction on the film will begin in May with principal photography starting this summer in the Northeast.
The producers say that if the goal isn’t reached, the likelihood of a sequel ever happening is close to zero.
“Since we refused to write a sequel where the highway cops have morphed into superhero vampires, Fox Searchlight proposed the following deal: They’ll release the film, but we have to raise all of the money. So we’ve turned to Indiegogo and our fans to prove that it’s finally time for Super Troopers to get made,” stated Chandrasekhar, who directed the original, in the campaign’s launch. On top of the usual array of perks, such as T-shirts and tickets to the premiere, Broken Lizard is offering some more unusual rewards. Yes, there will be prop giveaways, including one of the actual patrol cars used in the movie, but there will also be a chance to drink against the cast at a Beerfest tournament and a chance “to join the guys in Colorado for a 100% legal cannabis outing,” according to the producers.
Veronica Mars currently hold the record for the most money raised in the crowdfunded-movie department for its eye-popping $5.7 million raised in the spring of 2013. (It, too, had a goal of $2 million, and raised $1.2 million in its first 12 hours.)
Zach Braff raised $3.1 million for his indie dramedy Wish I Was Here, also in 2013.
