Based on the short film of the same name, the 15-episode series will focus on a dark relationship between a monster protector in the woods and a pure-hearted teenager.

Facebook is getting into the horror genre.

The social network's Watch platform will be the home for The Birch, a monster series based on the short film of the same name.

The Birch will focus on a monster protector in the woods and a pure-hearted teenager who summons her in a time of crisis. The 15-episode series will explore the story from multiple character perspectives.

The original short film, which screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, has been viewed more than 11 million times since it was first posted on YouTube in May 2015. The Crypt TV production has garnered more than 35 million views across all platforms.

"Crypt is absolutely thrilled to bring one of its most successful monsters ever to Facebook Watch," said Crypt TV CEO Jack Davis. "Crypt has over 8.2 million fans on the platform and I know our audience is going to be ecstatic to see more premium Birch content on Facebook Watch, a place where creative, linear driven stories are really thriving."

Founded in 2015 by Davis and filmmaker Eli Roth, Crypt TV has focused on building a new generation of monsters for digital audiences. The company, which is backed by Blumhouse Productions, distributes its videos primarily on Facebook, where it has generated more than 1 billion views. Crypt's other franchises include The Look-See and Sunny Family Cult.

Production on The Birch, which is being executive produced by Davis, Kate Krantz and Darren Brandl, will begin in early 2019.
