AFM: Dakota Fanning Joins 'Sweetness in the Belly'
Fanning will play a woman caught between two worlds in Zeresenay Berhane Mehari’s adaptation of the bestselling novel by Camilla Gibb.
The Alienist actress Dakota Fanning has signed on to star in Sweetness in the Belly, an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Camilla Gibb, which Ethiopian filmmaker Zeresenay Berhane Mehari will direct.
Fanning will play Lilly, the child of English hippies who is orphaned when they are murdered and who is raised at a Sufi Islam shrine in Morocco. She embraces the Muslim faith but feels like an outsider in Africa and, fleeing a civil war, escapes to her parents' homeland in England, only to again confront the riddle of who she is and where she belongs. She embraces the immigrant community in London, attempting to reunite people with their scattered families.
Wunmi Mosaku (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) and Big Bang Theory actor Kunal Nayyar co-star. Mehari will begin shooting on Sweetness in Dublin this week before heading to Ethiopia.
Sweetness was developed by Sienna Films and is produced by Sienna Films' Jennifer Kawaja and Julia Sereny with Alan Moloney and Susan Mullen of Parallel Films. Mehret Mandefro and Adrian Sturges are executive producers along with Laura Bickford and Fiona Druckenmiller.
HanWay Films is handling worldwide sales and shopping the project to buyers at this year's American Film Market. Entertainment One will distribute the film in Canada.
Fanning, who will next been seen playing Squeaky Fromme in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, is represented by Echo Lake Entertainment, WME and Hansen Jacobson.
Mosaku is represented by Scott Marshall Partners, The Gersh Agency and Principal Entertainment LA and Nayyar by Innovative Artists, Lovett Management and lawyer Jim Hornstein.
