'Dance' dominates Wed. night; ABC improves

NEW YORK -- "So You Think You Can Dance" led Fox to victory in both key measures in Wednesday's primetime.

The 9 p.m. hour of "Dance" averaged 9.8 million viewers and a 3.8 rating/11 share in adults 18-49, according to preliminary estimates released Thursday by Nielsen Media Research. Fox won 9 p.m. as well as 8 p.m. with a special edition of "Dance" (8.4 million, 3.2/11).

Meanwhile, ABC's lineup improved slightly. The 8 p.m. "The Next Best Thing" (7.2 million, 2.2/7) came out ahead of last week (6.2 million, 2.0/7); so did "American Inventor" (6.6 million, 2.4/7) compared with a week ago (6.1 million, 2.1/6). But ABC lost any momentum it had going into 10 p.m. with sci-fi drama "Traveler" (3.8 million, 1.3/4), which was down further from last week's 4.5 million and 1.6/5 in adults 18-49.

NBC's "Last Comic Standing" (5.7 million, 2.5/7) came in second at 9 p.m. against "Dance" but was down slightly from last week's 6 million and 2.6/8 in the demo. CBS, which trailed all night, was able to tie "Dateline" (6.2 million, 2.2/6) with a repeat "CSI: NY" (8.1 million, 2.2/7) in the demo and win in viewership.

Wednesday averages: Fox (9.1 million, 3.5/11); CBS (6.6 million, 1.8/6); ABC (5.9 million, 2.0/6); NBC (5.3 million, 2.1/6); and the CW (1.4 million, 0.5/2).
