'Dance' performs well for Fox

'Betty,' 'Southland' season finales sluggish

It was a hot start to the summer season for Fox.

Its reality hit "So You Think You Can Dance" returned with a 3.4 rating/11 share among adults 18-49.

That is down only 0.1 from last year's season premiere while TV usage has dropped 10% year-to-year. In total viewers, the show was up slightly from last year, 8.8 million vs. 8.7 million.

The numbers are encouraging given Fox's plans to launch another cycle of "Dance" against regular competition in the fall.

Thursday, the first night after the end of the 2008-09 season, also marked the season finales of "Ugly Betty" on ABC from 8-10 p.m. and NBC's "Southland" at 10 p.m.

Both bowed out on a low note, with "Betty" scoring a 1.9/6 in 18-49, down 21% from its 2008-09 original average, and "Southland" at 2.0/6, down 17% from its prior average.

The rest of the competition was in repeats.
