Danny Aiello to Pen Memoir for Gallery Books

The 80-year-old "Do the Right Thing" actor will tell his life story in a book to be released fall 2014.

Actor Danny Aiello is becoming an author.

Gallery books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, will publish a memoir by Aiello, it was announced Tuesday by vp and publisher Jennifer Bergstrom.

 “Danny Aiello is a great talent with an amazing story to tell,” said Bergstrom. “He is beloved by generations of fans who I’m sure will be eager to read his book.”

Aiello has more than 85 films on his resume, debuting in his first movie Bang the Drum Slowly with Robert De Niro at age 40. His credits also include Fort Apache: The Bronx, The Godfather Part II, Once Around, Moonstruck and The Purple Rose of Cairo.

Aiello received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for best supporting actor in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, as well as an Emmy for the ABC special Family of Strangers. He has also released four albums and tours the country with his band Joe Geary and the Guys.

The currently untitled memoir will cover Aiello’s journey from gang fights in New York City to fame as prolific actor.

“If you are a fan and read my book, you will love it,” Aiello said. “If you do not know who the hell I am, hopefully it will inspire you. If you are not a fan, you will be.”

Senior editor Ed Schlesinger negotiated the deal with Jennifer De Chiara at The Jennifer De Chiara Literary Agency, which includes North American rights. The memoir is scheduled for publication in fall 2014.
