Before the 'Roots' Remake, This Was Dave Chappelle's Version

Dave Chappelle's faux 'Roots' edition.

The History Channel's revival premiered Monday.

Long before the History Channel undertook the Roots remake, comedian Dave Chappelle poked fun at the drama series in his beloved Comedy Central show.

In a faux commercial for his Roots DVD anniversary edition, Chappelle offered his own various "hilarious practical jokes and outtakes" from the filming of the series.

One of the moments poked fun at in Chappelle's version is a whipping scene.

The actual Roots remake by the History Channel is a four-part, eight-hour series which debuted Monday and is running through June 2 on History, Lifetime and A&E.

The original series, based on Alex Haley's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, debuted in 1977 on ABC.
