David Mamet's 'Redbelt' set for Taormina

Screening won't conflict with European Cup

ROME -- David Mamet's martial arts drama "Redbelt" will be among the highlights of next month's Taormina Film Festival, organizers said, screening late so that it does not conflict with the June 17 European Cup soccer match between France and Italy in Zurich.

The festival said it has asked for permission to screen the game in Taormina's historic Greek Theatre ahead of the "Redbelt" screening.

The game will be the biggest between the two countries since Italy beat France for the World Cup title in a controversial matchup two years ago.

"We can't fight against soccer," festival director Deborah Young said. "We have to just roll with it."

Organizers also said that a restored version of Federico Fellini's dark short film "Tony Damit" will be one of two opening for the festival. The film stars Terence Stamp.

The festival will take place June 15-21.
