The 'Harry Potter' grad will star alongside Leo Bill and Kerry Fox in the "unromantic comedy," which has started principal photography.

David Thewlis has joined the cast of Rare Beasts, the directorial debut of British stage and screen star Billie Piper (Yerma, Doctor Who), which has started principal photography.

The Harry Potter grad, recently seen in the third season of Fargo, has been cast alongside Leo Bill (Peterloo, Alice in Wonderland), Kerry Fox (Shallow Grave, The Dressmaker) and newcomer Toby Woolf (Summer of Rockets).

Described as a darkly funny "unromantic comedy," Rare Beasts will see Piper playing a modern woman in crisis. Raising a boy, Larch (Woolf), in a female revolution and professionally writing about a love that no longer exists, she falls upon a troubled man, Peter (Bill), who seeks traditional dynamics and a sense of worth in this current female movement.

"Rare Beasts is a cautionary tale," said Piper. "Where do we all go after the fallout between men and women? And who do we really need at the end of it all? I’ve been longing to talk ‘dramatically’ about the world I see around me and ultimately, I’ve always wanted to make my own films. This is a wonderful moment."

The film is being produced by Vaughan Sivell of Western Edge Pictures (Third Star, Prevenge) in association with Moffen Media Limited. Executive producers are Vaughan Sivell; Franki Goodwin; Mike Rattenbury; Will Kane for Western Edge Pictures; Paul Higgins for Fields Park; Josh Varney and Ben Pugh for 42; and Piper.

Piper is repped by Curtis Brown Agency in the U.K. and CAA and MGMT Management in America.
