'Day' brakes after 'Dancing'

ABC faced a seesaw Wednesday with a huge turnout for the finale of "Dancing With the Stars" and a less-than-huge retention for the two-hour premiere of the new drama "Day Break."

The 8 p.m. "Dancing" finale brought in 27.5 million viewers and a 7.1 rating/19 share in adults 18-49 as former NFL running back Emmitt Smith took the trophy. ABC had a hard time getting that crowd to stick around for the 9-11 p.m. debut of "Day Break" (10.2 million, 3.6/9), which was topped by CBS' "Criminal Minds" (16.5 million, 4.9/12) and "CSI: NY" (16.2 million, 5.2/14).

The two-hour season premiere of NBC's "Medium" couldn't keep pace either, bringing in 9.4 million viewers and a 3.5/9 in the demo from 9-11 p.m.

CBS opened the night with "Jericho" (9.3 million, 2.9/8). Fox was on the sidelines with a double dose of "Bones," which rattled 7.8 million viewers and a 2.9/8 with an original at 8 p.m.

For the night, ABC led with 16.1 million viewers and a 4.8/13; CBS was a competitive No. 2 with 14 million viewers and a 4.3/11.
