"Easy Rider"
1955 Hopper makes his film debut in "I Died a Thousand Times"; appears in "Rebel Without a Cause" opposite James Dean.

1961 Marries Brooke Hayward, his first of five wives.

1969 Writes (with Peter Fonda and Terry Southern), directs and stars in "Easy Rider." Receives the best first work award at the Festival de Cannes; nominated the following year for a screenwriting Oscar.

1970 Marries Michelle Phillips, who files for divorce a week after the wedding.

1971 "The Last Movie" receives the Critics' Prize at the Venice Film Festival. Shows "Dennis Hopper: Black and White Photographs" at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington.

"The Big Valley"

1979 Appears in Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now."

1987 Receives supporting actor Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for his role in "Hoosiers"; a Globe nomination also for "Blue Velvet."

1994 Plays a mad bomber in "Speed."

2002 Appears in five episodes of Fox's "24."

2003 The youngest of Hopper's four children, Galen Grier, is born to fifth wife Victoria Duffy.

2007 "Dennis Hopper at the Hermitage" shows the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

2009 Reps acknowledge Hopper's prostate cancer, confirm chemotherapy.
