Washington will direct the adaptation of the August Wilson play, which is getting an awards-season run from the studio.

Denzel Washington's adaptation of August Wilson’s play Fences has received a Christmas holiday release date from Paramount.

The movie, which Washington will direct and star in alongside Viola Davis, will bow in theaters on Dec. 25, positioning it for an awards-season run.

Adapted for the screen by Wilson, the film focuses on a promising baseball player turned garbage collector and his complicated relationship with his wife and son. Washington and Davis also starred in the 2010 Broadway revival of the drama, roles that earned both actors Tony Awards.

The holidays are normally a busy time at the box office. This December will see the release of Star Wars prequel Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Jennifer Lawrence's highly anticipated sci-fi love story Passengers, as well as video game adaptation Assassin's Creed and Will Smith's Collateral Beauty.

The only other film currently slated to have a Christmas Day opening is the James Franco-Bryan Cranston comedy Why Him?
