Russian Distributor Arthouse Picks Up Cannes Winner 'Dheepan'

The movie is to have a theatrical release this coming December.

The distributor Arthouse has acquired Palme d’Or winner Dheepan by Jacques Audiard for a theatrical release in Russia.

Arthouse continues to release movies in Russia at a time when the market for auteur cinema is shrinking and several major players in the segment, such as West, Caravella DDC and A-Company have gone bankrupt.

"Several of our major competitors have recently gone bankrupt, so it is an increasingly difficult market, but we are committed to conquer it and invest in bringing art house film to Russia against the odds," Yan Vizinberg, co-founder and CEO of Arthouse and their US-based parent company Lorem Ipsum Corp., told The Hollywood Reporter.

Dheepanis going to be the third film to premiere in Arthouse’s "hat trick" of major film festival winner acquisitions this year.

The 2014 Venice winner A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence by Roy Andersson premiered this June, followed by Berlin International Film Festival winner Taxi by Jafar Panahi this month.

The release of Dheepan has been scheduled for December 2.
