'Diary' makes Web-to-TV leap

It lured 500,000 viewers per episode when it aired on social networking site Bebo. Now "Sofia's Diary" is headed for a mainstream television window, securing a slot on the soon-to-launch U.K. digital network Fiver, part of the RTL-owned Five network.

The drama, produced by Sony Television Pictures International, is the first time an online format has been picked up for U.K. TV.

Fiver will air three-minute episodes of the show at 4:55 p.m. each weekday afternoon and launch a 30-minute fortnightly omnibus.

The show will give television viewers a chance to sample the shortform format that has worked so well within the social media environment and see if it will translate to television.

Aimed at teens and twenty-somethings, "Sofia's Diary" follows the adventures of 17-year-old Sofia Taylor, played by newcomer Rachel Hyde-Harvey, as she adjusts to a new life with her father and step-family after getting into trouble in school.
