Digital TV halfway there by 2013

Worldwide tally will be 343 mil by 2009

BRUSSELS -- Half the world's homes, or 636 million households, will have digital television by 2013, according to a forecast published Monday.

Informa Telecoms and Media said that 67 million digital TV households will be added in 2008, bringing the worldwide total to 343 million and a penetration rate of 24%. Another 62 million will be added in 2009.

Cable will be the main source of digital TV, bringing in 290 million homes by 2013, followed by pay direct-to-home satellite (129 million), digital terrestrial television (111 million), IPTV (54 million) and freesat (51 million).
