Dior Backstage Beauty Opens a Pop-Up on Rodeo Drive
Dior Beauty is bringing its immersive backstage makeup experience to Los Angeles.
Dior has done beauty pop-ups in New York City and Paris, and now it’s Los Angeles' turn.
The French luxury heritage brand is inviting makeup junkies to come "backstage" as it were and experience the latest additions to their Backstage Line — the collection of makeup essentials designed to suit all skin tones and used at the Dior runway shows. Open Thursday through May 19, the temporary boutique will be the only location in the U.S. to carry this season’s three new additions — Dior Backstage Amber Neutrals Eye Palette, Dior Backstage Glow Glitz Palette and Dior Backstage Face and Body Primer — before the collection officially hits stores in June.
Peter Philips, creative director of Christian Dior makeup, who flew into Los Angeles for the opening the week after the design house’s star-studded Resort 2020 collection presentation in Marrakech, told The Hollywood Reporter, “With Backstage, we are using our expertise backstage at shows and shoots to make doing your own makeup as easy as having a makeup artist do it."
With a focus on inclusivity, the line includes 40 shades of foundation (the new industry standard since Rihanna launched her makeup line Fenty Beauty with that number) that deliver lightweight coverage, using encapsulated pigments in a water formula which evaporate to create a glowy finish. "What women want now is a luminous matte, nothing too dewy or glittery," says Philips. The lip and eye palettes meanwhile all come with nine coordinating colors in a range of finishes and can be applied with the fingers or a brush, depending on the user's level of expertise.
For the duration of the pop-up, shoppers will be able to book complimentary makeup application sessions, get backstage tips from Dior’s International Pro Team Artists and walk the "runway," complete with 360° cameras which will send the video straight to your smartphone. The boutique will also host a series of in-store events with beauty experts including Meghan Markle’s makeup artist Daniel Martin and YouTube beauty vlogger Desi Perkins.
Among the must-haves you should not leave without is the new Primer, which Philips says is a real hero product. "It's amazing ... almost a skincare product. It has a peachy color that works on darker skin tones, gives 24-hour hydration and a blurring effect," he says. "You can use it on its own without foundation on top and men can use it, too." Also don't miss brand ambassador Bella Hadid's favorite, The Contour Palette. "I had made three contour sticks for the Fall collection and I used Bella's favorite as the basis for the palette," says Philips. "She really embraces the easiness of the collection and swears by the Contour."
