Will Johnny Depp Show Up at Dior's Pre-Coachella Party in Pioneertown?
The actor-musician fronts Dior's Sauvage cologne, which will be feted at the event.
French luxury fashion house Dior is planning another big hurrah in Los Angeles. Following up on the resort 2018 fashion show that creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri brought to the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve in the mountains of Calabasas in May 2017 and last week's launch party for the Dior Addict Lacquer Plump hosted by Bella Hadid at Poppy nightclub, Dior announced Thursday that its next L.A. soiree will be a fragrance launch in the desert in April.
On April 12, the evening before the Beyonce-headlined Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival kicks off, Dior will take over the Pioneertown Motel (125 miles from L.A. near Joshua Tree National Park, in the town founded in 1946 by Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Dick Curtis and Russell Hayden) for a party in honor of the brand's new Dior Sauvage eau de parfum, which hit counters March 1. House perfumer Francois Demachy's new heightened eau de parfum concentration of Sauvage ($92 to $115 at Dior.com) is warmed up with the spice of nutmeg and a sultry splash of vanilla.
But let's cut to the chase with the most pressing question: Will Johnny Depp show up?
Depp has fronted campaigns for the fresh, woody scent since its original eau de toilette launch in 2015 (the first men's cologne launch for the brand in a decade), and he stars in the latest campaign, shot in the same Joshua Tree desert locale. In the campaign imagery, Depp poses on a boulder in the desert, wearing piles of necklaces and surrounded by coyotes — the leader of the pack and a sort of modern-day shaman. A Dior Insta post captions one shot: "Johnny Depp, deep and sensual, beckons to the call of the #wild."
There will reportedly be a musical performance at the party by an as-yet unnamed act — maybe it will be Depp's band, Hollywood Vampires? (The 54-year-old actor-musician seems to have delved deeper into music lately, jumping onstage to perform with Stone Temple Pilots in Santa Clarita earlier this month.) Or could it be Rihanna, a Dior ambassador?
It remains to be seen whether any Hollywood Dior ambassadors (such as Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman and Charlize Theron) will join in the festivities. A spokesperson for Dior told The Hollywood Reporter that the guest list is still being finalized. So we'll just have to wait for what the campaign refers to as the "magic hour" (the time that Demachy says inspired the new fragrance) when dusk falls in the desert April 12.
