Director Yoo Hyun-mok dies at 84

Veteran director one of the pioneers of Korean cinema

SEOUL -- Yoo Hyun-mok, a veteran director regarded as one of the pioneers of Korean cinema, died Sunday following a stroke. He was 84.

Yoo was considered the Korean master of post-war realism through films including "Aimless Bullet" and "Martyrs" that delved into issues of religion, alienation and ideological tensions.

The local Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will posthumously award Yoo a special medal, honoring his contribution Korean cinema.
