DirecTV Latin America to Launch Sundance Channel

AMC Networks is continuing its international expansion with the Latin America carriage deal that covers seven Spanish-speaking countries and Brazil.

Cable network company AMC Networks is continuing its international expansion with a carriage deal with satellite TV giant DirecTV Latin America.

AMC/Sundance Channel Global, the company's international division, said Monday that it has partnered with the pay TV company to launch Sundance Channel in Latin American markets on September 17 in Spanish.

With the agreement, the network will for the first time be available in seven countries -- Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The line-up on the 24-hour Spanish-language channel will include AMC Network series such as Rectify and such series as Jeremy Piven-starrer Mr. Selfridge and Australian legal drama Rake alongside Sundance's trademark indie film programming, including Andrew Bujalski's Sundance Festival winner Computer Chess and Lena Dunham's Tiny Furniture, winner of the Independent Spirit Award for best first screenplay in 2011.

Financial details of the carriage agreement weren't disclosed. Following its launch on DirecTV Latin America’s platform, Sundance Channel will also be made available for distribution to pay TV operators across the region.

Said Robert Redford, founder of Sundance Channel: “It has long been my hope to see Sundance Channel expand globally to share the compelling stories of independent filmmakers and artists as widely as possible. Bringing Sundance Channel to Latin America builds on this vision.”

Bruce Tuchman, president of AMC/Sundance Channel Global, said: “This landmark partnership in Latin America is an important part of our global expansion strategy."
