Discovery Beefing Up Security at Maryland Headquarters
Discovery Communications is beefing up security at its Silver Springs, Maryland headquarters. The proposed upgrades were prompted by the hostage situation that took place at the building in September which ended when gunman James J. Lee was shot and killed by police.
The company has submitted plans to the Montgomery County Planning Board which call for an eight-foot gated fence in its public garden and separate entrances for visitors and employees, reports the Washington Examiner.
Since the standoff, the garden has only been open during weekend daylight hours and the building's lobby has been closed to the public.
Lee shut down the Discovery building for five hours on Sept. 1 after storming the building and holding a handful of employees at gunpoint. Lee's motive for his actions were linked to his disdain for what he considered the network's pro-birthing programming. He wrote in a letter to the network -- home of Kate Plus 8 and 19 Kids and Counting -- Lee said "Stop all shows glorifying human birthing on all your channels and on TLC."
